And there is a lot to be proud of! Let us explain a little bit more about the U.S. Coast Guard and the importance of this military force.
Basic Information on the U.S. Coast Guard
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for maritime safety, law enforcement, and search and rescue. Its jurisdiction covers both domestic and international waters, and its duties include federal regulatory agency missions.
It is the oldest continuous seagoing service of the United States as it was formed thanks to the idea of the Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in the U.S. Congress on 4 August 1790. Its first name was Revenue-Marine, and it was led by Hamilton himself with the aim to collect customs duties at the American seaports. In the 1860s, it was already called the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, and the previous name was given up.
The U.S. Coast Guard as we know it now was created on 28 January 1915 by merging the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service with the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Now, it is one of the American six armed forces and it has taken part in every significant conflict the United States has been involved in since 1790.
