The United States Navy (USN) is one of the eight uniformed services in the US focused on maritime service. It is considered the most powerful navy in the world, and the largest in terms of tonnage. In this measure, its active battle fleet exceeds the next 13 navies counted together, including 11 U.S. partner nations or allies. Also, the U.S. Navy is the third largest of the American military service branches when it comes to personnel.
The Roots of the U.S. Navy
The origins of the U.S. Navy reach the colonial seafaring tradition that led to the formation of a significant community of sailors, shipbuilders, and captains. Interestingly enough, at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War, Massachusetts even established its own Massachusetts Naval Militia.
Later, the Second Continental Congress debated whether it is necessary to form a national navy. The opponents claimed that there was no point in challenging the British Royal Navy, as it was the world’s greatest naval power at that time. On the other hand, the proponents said that thanks to a navy, both the shipping and the coast defense can be improved, and also, it would facilitate searching for support from other countries.
Then, George Washington, who was the Commander in Chief at that time, ended the debate when he commissioned the ocean-going schooner USS Hannah to interdict British merchants and notified the Congress about the captures. In October 1775, the Continental Congress decided to buy two vessels to get prepared for a cruise against British merchants. With this resolution, the Continental Navy was established, and it is referred to as the first emergence of the U.S. Navy.
The Continental Navy had its ups and downs, as it succeeded in many engagements and raided numerous British merchant vessels, but it also lost 24 of its vessels. Surprisingly, at one point it was even reduced to just two vessels in active service.
Knowing how many difficulties the U.S Navy experienced at its beginnings, it is even more impressive that it has developed to be the most powerful maritime force in the world!
